A Look At New York Sales Tax



 

Understanding New York sales tax is important if you live or shop in New York state. Each state handles their own taxation, so New York sales tax is unique to New York. Even within New York, sales tax can vary greatly. Sales tax adds to the cost of your purchase and that is why it helps for you to understand the sales tax rate and how it will impact you.

What is Sales Tax?

Sales tax is a percentage rate that the amount is based completely on the total of the sale price of the purchase. Every state in the United States has a sales tax except Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Not every state’s sales tax is the same. New York sales tax is going to differ in the amount and in what purchases are taxed that sales tax in another state.

It is up to the merchant to charge sales tax, collect the tax and submit it to the state. Some customers may not be charged sales tax and certain purchases may not be taxed. It is up to the merchant to understand the laws regarding the charge of New York sales tax.

New York Sales Tax Rates

The New York sales tax rate is 4%. Each county or locality can add onto that sales tax rate by three to 4.75%, making the rate range from 7 to 8.75%. Sales tax of the minimum 4% rate must be charged in every county and city in the state of New York. That 4% tax must be sent to the state for state use. Any additional percentage of New York sales tax charged by the county or locality is reserved for their use.

When Sales Tax is Applied

New York sales tax is charged on all purchases that are not exempt under the law. In New York there is not New York sales tax imposed on clothing or footwear when the whole sale is under $110. Most cities and local areas have kept sales tax on these items, though. New York sales tax is also not charged on college textbooks. For online purchases New York sales tax must be charged.

Understanding New York sales tax is important for everyone. While it is the responsibility of merchants to charge New York sales tax, consumers should know the laws, too. Ultimately when making purchases a consumer is the one liable for ensuring the tax is paid on their purchases. You may be required at the end of the year to report any purchases that you made where you did not pay sales tax on taxable goods.
