An Introduction To Texas Sales Tax
Texas sales tax is unique to Texas. Every state is in charge of their own sales tax. When you are shopping in Texas, whether you live in the state or not, you will pay
Texas sales tax. It helps to understand what purchases will be charged with sales tax and how sales tax will raise the cost of the purchases that you make within the state of Texas.
Purchases Subject to Sales Tax
Texas sales tax is charged on both products and services. Some exemptions may apply. Before making a purchase it is a good idea to find out if that purchase is subject to sales tax. Purchases made online or through mail order are also subject to Texas sales tax. The law states that even if the purchase is made from a retailer outside of Texas, if the product is to be used in Texas then you owe sales tax. Any retailer selling in Texas must charge sales tax on all taxable items.
In most cases it is the merchant’s responsibility to charge sales tax and ensure that it gets paid. However, if you are buying on the internet or through mail order and the merchant does not charge sales tax because they are not located in Texas then it becomes the buyer’s responsibility to pay the proper Texas sales tax on the purchase.
Tax Rate
The Texas sales tax rate is 6.25%. Local districts can impose an additional percentage of sales tax up to 2%. The maximum Texas sales tax rate is 8.25%. Any time you purchase a taxable item in Texas you must
pay sales tax. You can pay anywhere from 6.25% to 8.25% of sales tax on your purchase. Sales tax is imposed on the whole purchase, not each individual item purchased.
