An Introduction To The IRS
The Internal Revenue Service or the
IRS, is in charge of federal taxation laws and regulates all tax collection at the federal level. The IRS can help assist you with filing your taxes and preparing your withholding wages on your federal taxes. Understanding how the
IRS works and how they can help you will allow you to make filing your federal taxes go much more smoothly.
About the IRS
The
IRS originated in the Civil War. At that time the IRS was in charge of collecting an income tax that funded the war. The tax was repealed and reenacted and repealed again. Then in 1913 the Constitutional amendment was ratified allowing Congress the right to charge an income tax. This is also the same year that the Form 1040 was introduced.
In the 1950s the IRS was reorganized and was given the official name of the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998
helped to restructure the organization and help to create the newer image of the organization to resemble a private sector model.
What the IRS Does
The IRS is part of the Department of the Treasury. It is responsible for collecting and
processing tax payments to the federal government. The organization is responsible for providing its services to US taxpayers to ensure that they understand the tax laws and meet their responsibilities under these laws. They act as a neutral party that is there to assist the taxpayer, but also required to do the duty required of them by the federal government.
The IRS upholds tax laws passed by Congress. The organization works with both individuals and tax payers. The secretary of the Treasury is responsible for overseeing the organization and ensuring it is fulfilling its job as required under the law.
